Get to Know John
Prior to becoming a Mental Health Counselor, John Cinnamon earned a PhD in anthropology from Yale University. He has taught at Miami University Hamilton for many years and carried out cultural and historical research in Gabon, Africa. More recently, through that African research, through working with college students and his own life experiences, John turned to mental health counseling, completing a master’s degree at the University of the Cumberlands. He also has extensive experience working as a Crisis Counselor with the 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and a local mental health crisis hotline. John is particularly interested in helping a diverse range of individuals as they attempt to overcome internal and external obstacles while navigating our complex world and the ebbs and flows of life.
John understands that each client faces a unique set of challenges and may benefit from distinct counseling practices. He uses an integrated approach to mental health counseling, drawing on person-centered and humanistic approaches, mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, CBT and EMDR. As a lifelong learner, he continually seeks ways to strengthen his knowledge of the field and capacity to support clients as they move forward on their life path. Originally from Detroit, he is a lifelong Detroit Lions fan and loves making pilgrimages to watch the Lions play at Ford Field. He enjoys riding his bike to work and looking after three highly affectionate cats: Windsor, Ziggy and Maya.
John looks forward to working with clients as they strive to reach their full potential and be their best selves. To schedule a session at Foundations Counseling, call (513) 785-4895.
